History of Sydney International Equestrian Centre

The Sydney International Equestrian Centre (SIEC) was purpose-built for the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, cementing its place as one of the most significant equestrian venues in Australia.

Construction commenced in 1997 and was completed in 1999, creating a purpose-designed, international-standard equestrian complex set across 96 hectares at Horsley Park in Western Sydney.

The venue was designed to host elite equestrian sport while also providing a long-term legacy facility for the people of New South Wales.

Sydney 2000 Olympic & Paralympic Games

From 16 September to 1 October 2000

The Sydney International Equestrian Centre hosted all Olympic equestrian disciplines, including:

  • Dressage (Individual & Team)

  • Eventing (Individual & Team)

  • Show Jumping (Individual & Team)

The venue welcomed 195 competitors from 37 nations, with the cross-country phase drawing some of the largest crowds of the Sydney Games. Temporary infrastructure expanded spectator capacity to tens of thousands on peak competition days, particularly for eventing cross country.

Following the Olympic Games, the Centre also hosted equestrian events during the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, reinforcing its role as a truly inclusive and world-leading sporting venue.

An Enduring Olympic Legacy

Since the Games, the NSW Government has continued to invest in the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, ensuring its Olympic legacy remains active and relevant.

Today, SIEC hosts a diverse calendar of:

  • International, National, State and Club-level equestrian competitions

  • High-performance training and coaching clinics

  • Breed society events and championships

  • Community and school events

  • Non-equestrian activities including fun runs, exhibitions, emergency services training, filming and photography shoots

The Centre is recognised nationally and internationally for its scale, versatility and professional standard of facilities.
